Cantilever Racking

Cantilever Racking Brisbane QLD & Aus Wide

Cantilever racking is a storage system that’s designed specifically to take long products. That could be anything from PVC pipes to timber to lengths of steel, it varies widely, but that’s essentially what cantilever racking is best used for. With its open front design, forklifts can easily load and unload packs directly onto the arms, making it the go-to solution for awkward or oversized items.

It’s important to note that cantilever racking is not designed for pallets at all. Unlike pallet racking or sheet racking, it’s purely for long lengths. The arms extend from the columns like strong shelving brackets, giving you the strength, flexibility, and reliability to store heavy or bulky materials safely.

Key Features and Benefits

High load capacity

Each cantilever level can hold up to 1,000kg (depending on column load), giving you the confidence to store even the heaviest long products. While most businesses won’t reach the maximum, having that capacity available means the system is always engineered to support your needs safely.

Height options

We supply light duty systems (up to 3m), medium duty (up to 6m, which makes up 90% of what we sell), and heavy duty for large distribution centres (up to 9m). This gives flexibility depending on your space and how high your forklifts can reach.

Arm depth

With arms ranging from 900mm to 1500mm deep, you can tailor the rack to suit the size of your packs; whether you’re moving smaller bundles or large, bulky lengths.

Forklift compatibility

Most customers use a standard ride-on forklift, but cantilever also works with side loaders. A side loader is a specialised forklift that drives sideways and places long products down the aisle. It’s a great option for large, dedicated long-product warehouses.

Adjustable spacing

Column spacing can be set to suit your exact pack sizes during design and quoting. This not only ensures your products are properly supported but can also reduce costs by cutting down on the number of columns required when possible without compromising on safety.

Indoor and outdoor use

Cantilever racking is available for both indoor and outdoor applications, giving you flexibility no matter where you need storage. Indoors, the system is supplied in a durable painted finish, while outdoors it comes fully galvanised to withstand the weather. For outside use, we generally recommend single-sided runs against walls to factor in wind load ratings, ensuring the system is safe, compliant, and built to last in all conditions.

Single-Sided or Double-Sided

Cantilever racking can be built as single-sided or double-sided, depending on how you want to use the space. One of the big advantages of this system is that it’s interchangeable, you can start with single-sided and later convert to double-sided just by changing the bases and adding more arms. That way, if your storage needs grow, you can instantly double your capacity without having to replace the whole system.

Single-sided

Most often used against walls or outdoors. With outdoor installations, we generally recommend single-sided because wind load ratings need to be factored in. Having the rack anchored to a wall makes it safer and easier to manage in those conditions. It’s also a good option if long product storage isn’t your core business and you want it out of the way.

Double-sided

Best placed through the middle of a warehouse, as it’s a lot more cost-effective than single-sided. With arms on both sides, forklifts can load and unload from either direction, and you maximise the floor space being used. For businesses where long products are a big part of daily operations, double-sided runs are the standard setup.

Because it can switch between single and double-sided, cantilever racking gives you the flexibility to adapt. You might only need a small amount of single-sided racking at first, but if you expand or move into larger stockholding, the system can grow with you. It’s a future-proof solution that balances both cost and capacity.

Customisation Options

Cantilever racking is extremely versatile, and almost every element can be customised:

Height:

Light duty ranges from 2.4m to 3m, medium duty from 4m to 6m, and heavy duty from 6m upwards.

Arm depth:

From 900mm to 1500mm, depending on the size of your packs.

Arm levels:

As few as 2, or as many as 12 arm levels, depending on your load and the specs of your forklifts.

Column spacing:

Adjustable based on your pack widths. Many industries use around 6m packs, so we design the spacing to capture that. Bracing widths vary (900mm, 1200mm, 1500mm, 1800mm, 2100mm), giving you options to suit different loads.

Product type considerations:

Heavier products like steel need more arms to support the load. Lighter materials like conduit may bend if not supported correctly, so we factor in product type and gauge to prevent deformation.

Run length:

Cantilever can technically run for as long as you want, but we recommend 20–30m runs to balance logistics and fire code requirements.

This three-axis flexibility (height, depth, width) means we can tailor a cantilever system to almost any warehouse or product type.

Warehouse Design Approach

Our design process always varies depending on the client, because no two warehouses are the same. We start by looking at the warehouse as a whole; how much stock you want to store, the specifications of your products, and the type of material handling equipment you’re using. From there, we draw it into the warehouse plan and work out the most efficient way to fit everything in.
If you’ve got a mix of different-sized products, we’ll often design a layout that uses both cantilever racking and pallet racking together. But if your operation is purely long lengths, we’ll focus on cantilever to make the most of your space. In most cases, we recommend double-sided cantilever runs through the middle of the warehouse, as this is far more cost-effective than single-sided. It allows you to load and unload packs from both sides, but it does require more clearance, especially when swinging six-metre packs each way. If long products aren’t your core business, or you only need a small amount of storage, then single-sided cantilever against the wall keeps it neat, safe, and out of the way.
Every industry is different, so we adjust the layout to suit, ensuring the system is efficient, compliant, and tailored to your business.

Real-World Applications

Sunshine Mitre 10

Sunshine Mitre 10 were originally storing their timber in pigeon hole racks. That worked fine when they were only moving smaller volumes, but as their stores grew, tradies wanted to buy full packs of timber, not just single pieces like the weekend handyman. The pigeon holes couldn’t keep up and they were running out of room and the picking process was too slow. By investing in outdoor cantilever racking, they were able to create a proper drive-through system. Forklifts could load full packs straight onto a ute or truck while the tradie drove through, speeding up the whole process dramatically. It not only improved efficiency but also meant they could cater to a much bigger trade customer base.

Ulrich Aluminium

Ulrich Aluminium had been using A-frame racks for a long time, storing loose aluminium profiles. As their business grew, they quickly ran out of space and efficiency dropped, staff were spending too much time picking through loose sections. They didn’t want to move warehouses, so the challenge was how to store more product in the same footprint. The solution was to bundle 20-50 profiles together and store them in cantilever racking. This instantly increased capacity, kept the warehouse organised, and allowed them to operate on two levels: smaller batch orders could still be filled from A-frames, while full packs could move quickly through the cantilever racks for large-scale distribution.

What Is Cantilever Racking Used For?

The most common use for cantilever racking is to store long product, such as:

  • Timber packs
  • Plastic decking
  • Decking
  • Cyclone rod
  • Threaded rod
  • Timber extrusions
  • Ply wood
  • Plaster board
  • Gyprock
  • Irrigation

  • Cement sheet
  • Aluminium extrusions
  • Steel lengths
  • Window frames
  • Door frames
  • Security mesh
  • Plastic sheet
  • Timber sheet
  • Timber panels

  • Cornice
  • Mouldings
  • Flashings
  • Gutter
  • Car body
  • Cold room panel
  • Insulated panel
  • Plumbing supplies
  • Pipe

  • PVC Pipe storage
  • Agriculture pipe
  • Roller door
  • Garage door
  • Mining
  • Conduit
  • Steel grate
  • Roofing
  • Gutter

However, if your item isn’t listed here, that doesn’t mean it can’t be stored with cantilever! There is a huge range of product that can be stored and we can tailor a solution to your needs.

Cantilever racking is not designed for pallets at all, and it’s not the right choice for sheet products either. Sheets of timber, steel, or plastic usually come in sizes around 2.4m wide, which means they’ll hang over the front of the arms (which are limited to about 1500mm) and risk bending or snapping. In those cases, sheet racking is always the better option, because it gives you a proper shelf to support the product. The rule of thumb is simple: cantilever for long lengths like timber, steel, conduit or PVC pipes; sheet racking for flat sheets.

Cantilever racking bolts together like a big Meccano kit. However, while it might look simple, there are intricacies that mean we don’t recommend self-install. Our installers make sure everything is set up correctly and safely, then provide a safe workload sign showing the exact capacities for compliance, insurance, and peace of mind.

Under Australian Standard AS4084-2023, cantilever is specifically excluded because that standard only applies to pallet racking. So instead, our system is designed and manufactured to meet the FEM European standards, which are the recognised benchmark for cantilever racking worldwide.

That means every rack we install is pre-engineered, giving you confidence that the system is structurally sound. As part of the process, we provide:

  • Engineering ratings for your specific design, so you know the exact capacities.
  • Safe workload signage attached to the rack, showing how it was designed and what it can safely hold. This is important for insurance, compliance, and day-to-day operations.

For outdoor installations, we also factor in wind load ratings. That’s why outdoor systems are usually galvanised and often single-sided against a wall, it ensures the rack can handle weather conditions safely.

All of this adds up to peace of mind: your cantilever system is not only designed to suit your products, but also installed and certified to the correct standards for safety and compliance.
