JAT Coldstores – Cold Room Food and Drink Storage Case Study

Cold Room Food & Drink Storage

With vast amounts of fresh local produce available at our fingertips in Australia, do you ever consider how it got from the farm to your plate? Generally, produce travels from the farm to a processing plant and then onto the shelves of your local store, remaining refrigerated and fresh during the journey.

An industry leader in transporting chilled/frozen goods since 1986, JAT Coldstores is the first choice for produce freight amongst food companies Australia-wide. With Queensland depots in locations such as Townsville and Morningside, South Brisbane.

JAT keeps these goods in storage and ships them around the country, relying on MACRACK pallet racking to ensure the efficient storage of their precious chilled cargo.

Cold Storage Background

JAT Refrigerated Road Services has grown from a small operation in 1986 by John and Heather Azzopardi to a well-respected industry leader in the movement of chilled/frozen and ambient freight in and out of North Queensland and a line haul provider to the southern states.

JAT has established a close working relationship with national food companies and food service providers Australia wide. We deliver freight for our clients directly and compliment this relationship by being the preferred transport choice for a large percentage of their national free into store clients.

With a modern fleet of 45 trucks and over 70 trailers JAT provides its customers with a fast, efficient cost effective transport and storage solution.

Deep Store Racking

In order to maximise their warehouse space, we use double deep racking or deep store racking. This is an efficient solution for storing pallets in a limited space, allowing JAT to double their storage capacity in the same number of aisles. The key behind this system is a pantographic forklift which can extend its tines out the full depth of a pallet. This creates the option to have standard two deep pallet racking.

Key features of two deep racking include:

  • Maintains the same aisle width as regular pallet racking
  • Ability to store 4 pallets deep instead of 2
  • Higher capacity system
  • Lower cost than drive in racking.

Depth of Racking System

Our pallet racking frames are 840mm deep. This allows pallets to sit over the beams, being locked in by the natural lip within the pallet. Deep store storage features two frames, one behind the other, both able to be accessed from the one side and with a gap in between for pallet over hand.

Pallet Runners

JAT has included pallet runners on their beams as an extra safety feature. These work as a guide for the pallets when they are being placed onto the racking system. When using these guides, you no longer need to have the pallets hook over each frame, as the pallets will sit on top of the guides with ease.
