Pallet Racking

Guide To Types Of Warehouse Racking

Pallet racking is often used to refer to the most basic form of racking – selective pallet racking. However, the term pallet racking actually encompasses a wide range of warehouse racking and shelving systems that can be used to increase organisation, productivity, and storage capacity in a warehouse.

Pallet racking is a tried and true form of warehouse storage that is popularly used in warehouses throughout Australia across a wide range of industries with varying inventories. In its simplest form, pallet racking is designed to store palletized products, with high density and high accessibility racking systems available depending on your storage needs. There are also many specialised forms of pallet racking used to store a range of other products, from carpet rolls and cable drums to gyprock sheets and timber lengths.

Macrack provides quality, Australian-made pallet racking systems that can be customised to suit the needs of your business and product range. With over 35 years of industry experience, when it comes to warehouse racking in Brisbane, we’re the experts. Our racking systems are made to the highest quality with durable frames of pre-galvanised steel. In fact, we are so confident in the quality of our racking systems that we will provide a lifetime guarantee on any product we manufacture for your business.

Selective Pallet Racking

Selective Pallet Racking Example

Selective pallet racking is a one-pallet deep warehouse racking system that can be installed in a single row or more often in a back to back configuration to create aisles. Commonly found in many warehouses throughout Brisbane and Australia, selective pallet racking provides 100% product accessibility as every pallet that is stored in this system is visible and accessible from the aisle.

With maximum product accessibility, selective pallet racking is a versatile warehouse storage system that is particularly useful for inventories with high product differentiation as well as perishable items.

Double Deep Pallet Racking

double deep racking example

In a double deep pallet racking system, pallets are stored two-deep, with four pallets between each aisle when racks are arranged back to back. This significantly increased the number of pallets that can be stored by reducing the number of aisles needed, maximising the amount of floor space that can be used for pallet storage.

As pallets are stored two-deep, double deep racking still offers high product accessibility, with 50% of pallets immediately accessible from the aisle. This also means that longer forklift tynes are required in order to load and unload pallets from the back of the racking.

Push Back Pallet Racking

Push Back Racking Example

Push back pallet racking provides high-density pallet storage to maximise the number of pallets that can be stored in a space. In a push back racking system, pallets are loaded onto a moving cart system that can be anywhere from two to six pallets deep, depending on your storage needs.

The moving cart system allows pallets to roll to the front of the rack each time a pallet is unloaded. This makes push back racking compatible with standard forklifts as all pallets are accessed from the front of the system. As pallets can be stored up to six pallets deep, push back racking is ideal for bulk storage of the same products. Additionally, each level of a push back racking system is individually accessible, allowing for greater product variation than other high density storage systems.

Drive-In Pallet Racking

RSA 3

Drive-in pallet racking is a high density pallet racking system that is ideal for storing bulk amounts of the same product. In a drive-in pallet racking system, forklifts can drive into the system to retrieve pallets from any location, rather than just from the front. This eliminates the need for aisles, maximising the amount of floor space available for pallet storage.

Drive-in racking has limited product accessibility compared to other racking systems, as pallets are stored deep into the system rather than in aisle-facing rows. However, the increased pallet storage of drive-in racking makes it ideal for use in cold room and freezer storage where space is limited.

Pallet Flow Racking

Pallet Flow Racking Example

Pallet flow racking combines high-density storage with automatic product rotation for FIFO (first in, first out) storage. Pallets are loaded into the back of the system on an inclined track. This means that whenever a pallet is removed from the front of the system, all of the remaining pallets behind it will ‘flow’ forwards.

Like other high-density racking systems, pallet flow racking essentially eliminates the need for aisles, increasing the total number of pallets that can be stored. However, unlike most other high density racking systems, pallet flow racking is a FIFO system, making it ideal for the storage of perishables and products with a limited shelf life.

Cantilever Racking

Cantilever racking is ideal for the storage of long products. In a cantilever racking system, products are stored horizontally on steel arms connected to the racking uprights. Cantilever racking is a highly customisable system as the length of the steel arms that hold the products can be made to suit your specific product range. Additionally, the gap between uprights can be reduced to increase the rated load of the racks or increased for when storing lighter products for a more cost-effective racking system.

Sheet Racking

Sheet Racking Example

As the name suggests, sheet racking is designed for the storage of sheet materials such as gyprock, plywood, security mesh, etc. In a sheet racking storage system, stock can be hand-picked or retrieved using a forklift depending on the level and type of product stored.

Industrial Shelving

Industrial Shelving Example

Industrial shelving is a versatile warehouse storage system that can be built to store almost anything. Customisable in length, depth, height, and weight load capacity, industrial shelving can be used to increase storage and improve organisation in any Brisbane warehouse.

Longspan Shelving

Longspan Shelving Example

Longspan shelving is ideal for hand-picking warehouses with smaller products that are picked to order. Longspan shelving uses shared frames between each bay to create rows of cost-effective product storage. Using mesh deck shelving, our long span shelving systems can take up to 400kg per shelf (UDL).

Tyre Racking

Tyre racking provides a safe and practical way to store a wide range of tyres while increasing the number of tyres that can be stored in any given space. In a tyre racking system, tyres are stored vertically between beams that prevent the tyres from rolling out of position. This configuration also allows for simple product retrieval as tyres can be easily rolled out of the rack when needed.

Narrow Aisle Racking

Industrial Shelving Brendale

Narrow aisle racking is made with large shelves, perfect for the storage of furniture and similarly oversized products. As narrow aisle racks have large gaps between each shelf, a stock picker is required to retrieve products from higher levels. The use of a stock picker rather than a forklift also allows for narrow aisles, maximising the floor space that can be used for product storage.

Coil / Drum Racking

drum racking brisbane

Drum racking or coil racking is designed for the storage of any cylindrical item such as metal coils and industrial drums. Using the same frames and beams as a standard pallet racking system, drum racking has the addition of angled steel on either side of where each drum sits that works as a chock, preventing round products from rolling to either side when stored. A drum racker is required for forklifts to safely load and unload products from a drum racking system.

Cable Racking

Cable racking is designed for the storage of cable drums or spindles. Drums are stored horizontally on steel rods between racking frames. This allows for safe and easy access to stored cables for hand-picking. However, a forklift with a cable reel attachment is needed to load and unload cable drums from the rack.

Carpet Racking

Carpet Racking Example

Despite its name, carpet racking can be used to store any long cylindrical product such as vinyl, fabric, garage doors, and of course, carpet. As products stored in a carpet racking system are typically quite long, the system is designed to be deep enough to store products horizontally, maximising the number of shelves that can be added to the racks to increase overall storage capacity. Forklifts must use a roll prong attachment to effectively store and remove products from a carpet racking system.

A-Frame Racking

A Frame Racking Toowoomba

A-frame racking is ideal for the storage of long and rigid, hand-picked items such as timber lengths, plastic extrusions, decking, and more. In an A-frame rack, products are stored on their end, leaning back onto an angled frame. This makes use of vertical space to minimise the footprint of stored products in order to increase storage capacity.

Raised Storage Areas

RSA 2

(Also Referred To As Multi-tier Racking or Warehouse Mezzanine Floors)

Raised storage areas or warehouse mezzanine floors are essentially racking-supported platforms that are used to create another level of storage or even multiple new levels of storage in a multi-tier racking configuration. Installing a raised storage area is a cost-effective way to significantly increase available floor and storage without having to move to a larger facility.
