Warehouse Storage Solutions For Irregularly Shaped Products

Warehouse Storage Solutions For Irregularly Shaped Products

Although pallet racking is the ideal storage solution for many warehouses, other warehouses that deal in products that are not palletized, or products that are large, cumbersome, or irregularly shaped, require tailored storage solutions.

No matter the size or shape of your products, it’s important to choose a storage system that will store them neatly and safely for easy retrieval. There are a wide range of alternative storage systems available to store all types of products, from sheet metal, timber, and pipes, to carpet rolls, tyres, and cable reels.

If you’re looking for a storage solution that is tailor made for the size, shape, and weight of your products, as well as your available warehouse space, look no further than Macrack. With over 35 years of experience manufacturing customised storage solutions for Australian warehouses, when it comes to warehouse storage, we’re the experts. Storage Solutions for Irregularly Shaped Products

The ideal storage system for your warehouse depends on the type of products you are storing. For example, if you need to store bulk amounts of carpet rolls or other cylindrical products, carpet racking is the way to go. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a storage system that will safely hold heavy cable reels in place while allowing for the easy retrieval of each cable stored, a cable racking system is the answer.

Below is an outline of each of our specialised product storage systems designed for specific types of products and warehouses.

Cantilever Racking

Cantilever racking is a storage system that is great for storing wide or long loads. Using the frame of a standard racking system, cantilever racks are built with horizontal steel arms attached to the frame. This allows long products to be stored horizontally, supported by the steel arms.

Macrack can build a customised cantilever racking system ideally suited to the storage of your products. Whether you need longer arms to store wider loads, additional frames (with less distance between uprights) for storing heavier items, or less frames (with wider distances between uprights) for a cost-effective, lightweight storage solution, we’ve got it covered.

Common Products Stored Using Cantilever Racks:

  • Timber Packs
  • Decking
  • Plywood
  • Plasterboard
  • Gyprock
  • Window Frames
  • Door Frames
  • Mouldings
  • Pipes
  • Roofing
  • Guttering

Carpet Racking

Carpet racking is designed for the storage of long, cylindrical items, such as carpet rolls. Carpet racks are essentially a lengthened pigeon hole storage system that allows products to be stored horizontally. This ensures that the products are protected from damage and dust while in the storage system, and allows for full access to all items stored in the rack. In a carpet racking system, products are retrieved using a special carpet spike forklift attachment. This ensures that the products are not damaged when loading or unloading, as in alternative storage arrangements products would be lifted from the centre of the roll which can result in sagging.

As with most of our racking systems, Macrack offers customisation options for carpet racking, including optional hand picking at ground level with the bulk of the products stored in the racks above.

Common Products Stored Using Carpet Racks:

  • Carpets
  • Vinyls
  • Garage doors
  • Bubble wrap
  • Flooring
  • Curtains
  • Insulation
  • Rugs

Drum Racking

Drum racking is used for the storage of industrial drums and steel coils. In a drum racking system, products are loaded into cradles made of two pieces of angled steel that have been welded to the frame. These cradles act as chocks, holding the drum or steel coil in place and preventing it from rolling to either side.

This is essential as products stored in a drum racking system are generally very heavy and rounded which can be a deadly combination without taking measures to ensure the stored products. Not only do the cradles prevent stored products from moving on their own, they also ensure that products are not moved as a result of being accidentally bumped which is a common issue when it comes to the loading and unloading of round products.

Common Products Stored Using Drum Racks:

  • Steel Coils
  • Steel Drums
  • 44 Gallon Drums
  • Bluescope Coil
  • Wire

Cable Racking

Cable racking is ideal for storing industrial cable drums or spindles. In a cable racking system, the drums or spindles are stored horizontally, with a steel rod running through the centre of each spindle. This ensures that the products are securely stored while allowing for the easy retrieval of cords, chains, cables, and other products stored on industrial spindles, as they will unravel when pulled.

By allowing cable drums to be stored in a vertical racking system, cable racking will dramatically increase the number of cables that can be stored in your warehouse without hindering product accessibility.

  • Steel Cables
  • Boat Cables
  • Chain
  • Cord
  • Rigging
  • Rope

Tyre Racking

Tyre racking can be used to store a wide range of tyres, from car and truck tyres to golf cart, ATV, and motorbike tyres. Due to the rounded shape of the product, tyres can be difficult to store in bulk without causing damage to products or posing health and safety risks.

In a tyre racking system, tyres are stored vertically to maximise storage capacity. A tyre racking system is built with a beam both at the front and the back of each rack. This allows the tyres to be stored vertically, with the two beams on either side preventing the tyres from rolling by themselves. However, due to the simple design of a tyre racking system, tyres stored in the racks can be easily rolled off for minimal-effort picking.

Tyre racking is a much safer and more efficient tyre storage solution than stacking tyres as it dramatically reduces the risk of tyres falling when loading or unloading them, potentially causing damage to products and injuries to workers. Storing tyres in a racking system also reduces manual handling as tyres can be rolled off of the racks rather than having to be lifted.
