What is Cable Racking

Cable racking is based on the pallet racking frame but designed specifically for cable drums to be stored vertically, reducing the storage footprint required. This system is most widely used by the electrical and communications industries. However, the applications for this system also cover industries that store volumes of chain, rope and steel cable amongst other things on cable drums. In this system, a spindle is inserted through the middle of the cable drum. With the spindle installed, the cable drum is then placed into the racking system using a standard forklift with a curved pickup cradle. Cable racking allows for handpicking while the drum remains installed in the system. This removes unnecessary unloading and loading of the drum, saving time. The cable is accessed by simply pulling on the tail of the cable. Many companies will use a cut and measure machine which is hooked up to the tail of the drum. When the required length is cut, the cable is wound back onto the drum.

Key Advantages:

  • reduces required footprint by storing drums vertically
  • drums remain accessible to operators while loading in the system

Type of Equipment Required for Handling:

  • standard forklift with a curved pickup cradle to load or remove the cable drums
  • cut and measure machines are commonly used to access the cables while the spindle remains loaded in the system

Industries:

  • most commonly electrical & communications industries

What Can You Store on Cable Racking?

Most things that are wound on a cable drum can be stored in cable racking. This includes:

  • cables
  • chain
  • cord
  • steel cable
  • rigging
  • boat cable
  • rope
  • electrical cable
  • communications cable
